Nutrition
“Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine thy food.” Hippocrates, 5th century B.C.
Sounds simple, right?
Well, not exactly.
According to Michael Pollan, food activist and author of In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, “No people on earth worry more about the health consequences of their food choices than we Americans do—and no people suffer from as many diet-related health problems.”
Nutrition and Chinese Medicine
Nutrition represents a third pillar of the Chinese medical tradition and falls within the “scope of practice” for licensed acupuncturists. The current focus of our nutrition program is on supporting cancer patients during and after active conventional cancer treatment.
Nutrition and Cancer Care
At Life Cycle Health Center™, nutritional counseling serves three main purposes:
- Preventing cancer and its recurrence by educating patients and encouraging healthy food choices and weight management,
- Targeted nutrition to addresses specific cancer types, and
- Optimizing the effectiveness of conventional treatments.
Designing Anti-Cancer Strategies
Our practitioners work with you to define dietary goals,
design anti-cancer dietary strategies and create an individualized nutrition plan that will be reviewed and revised as needed.
Focusing on improving vitality and quality of life, we address your symptoms and the biochemistry of cancer prevention, modifying the nutritional strategy for each stage of your conventional treatment.
Each Person Is Unique
Each person presents a unique symptomatic picture, even though they may have the same disease and be receiving the same treatment as someone else. Some may need to lose weight and balance their blood sugar, others to gain weight and combat insomnia.
Different Nutrition At Different Treatment Stages
Preparing for, and recovering from, surgery requires different nutritional strategies than those for patients undergoing active chemotherapy or radiation. The right nutrition can enhance the effectiveness of specific types of chemotherapy drugs while protecting healthy cells.
Our practitioners consult with your oncologist prior to prescribing any supplements. It’s important that you inform us about any and all remedies you may be taking–from eye drops to vitamins, and even tea–to avoid conflicts with your conventional care.
